From Word of Mouth to Inc. 5000: A Social Enterprise Brand Transformation

What we builtBrand character, Points of Difference and Points of Parity, a fresh visual identity, refreshed templates and tools, and a 360° marketing campaign
The resultsNamed to the Inc. 5000 in year one, 90% growth in year one and 40% growth in year two

    The starting line

This small consulting firm was already doing something special. Clients loved the work, and year after year the business grew by word of mouth alone. There was a website and a logo. But there wasn’t a brand that matched the magic, and there wasn’t a plan to grow on purpose.

The founder was looking for a leader who understood the philanthropic and nonprofit world and knew marketing and business development inside and out. That’s where I came in.

From dark and academic to bright and accessible

The old look felt dark, heavy and academic. Smart, yes. Inviting, not so much. The people this company serves are busy nonprofit leaders doing hard, meaningful work. They deserved a brand that felt fresh, bright and easy to say yes to.

So we rebuilt the brand from the inside out:

    • A brand character. We defined the personality behind every word and image, so the brand sounds and feels like the same trusted partner everywhere it shows up.
    • Points of Difference (PODs). The things that make this company uniquely valuable and hard to copy. We put them front and center.
    • Points of Parity (POPs). The table stakes clients expect from any great partner. We made sure the brand clearly checked every box.
    • A fresh visual identity. Bright, light and accessible, with a look that feels as optimistic as the mission.
    • Refreshed templates and tools. Proposals, presentations and client materials rebuilt so the whole team could show up on brand, every time.
    • A 360° marketing campaign. An integrated launch across channels to introduce the new brand and turn word of mouth into real momentum.

    The results

    • Inc. 5000 honoree in the very first year
    • 90% growth in year one
    • 40% growth in year two

The brand kept growing and scaling. And then real life happened.

    Peaks and valleys

This company’s clients are nonprofits, and the social sector has been through a crisis. Here’s a truth every service business learns: when your client is in crisis, you’re in crisis.

Growth brings its own growing pains, too. We’ve navigated team onboarding, training, systems and operations. Some days were peaks. Some were valleys. All of it has been an incredible journey, and I wouldn’t trade it.

Why this work matters to me

I’m passionate about shifting power dynamics in the social sector. Nonprofits deserve the tools to use their own data to run efficiently, prove their programs work and create even greater impact. Helping build that capacity is the kind of work that lights me up.

    My favorite moment

Here’s the thing. My favorite part of this story isn’t the growth numbers or the award. It’s watching the founder transform. Learning, stretching, growing into the leader of something big.

The best day? She turned to me and said:

I have to remind myself I have a company. We’re not a startup anymore.

    The founder

The brand had become so strong that the people applying weren’t joining a small start-up. They were being hired by a real company, for a big job. And we all needed to own that. I love it!

    Your turn

Growing fast on word of mouth but not sure how to scale on purpose? That’s the perfect moment to build a brand and a plan that match your ambition. Let’s spark what’s possible.

From Waitress to Business Owner: A Hearing Practice Success Story

The clientOwner of a hearing care practice
Where she startedA lifelong server, ready for a fresh start
How Spark Arete helpedCareer coaching, strategic planning, branding, marketing and business growth
    Partnership15 years and counting
The resultFrom waiting tables to owning a thriving hearing practice

    The dream

She had spent her whole career waiting tables. She was great at it, too. But deep down she wanted something new. A fresh start. A career with room to grow. The problem? She couldn’t see how her experience would ever translate.

    That’s where we started.

    The spark

Here’s what I told her: you already have serious business skills. You just call them something else. Every shift, she was running a small business on her feet. So we translated her experience into the language employers look for:

    • Money management: handling cash, checks and end-of-night reconciliation
    • Customer service: turning first-time guests into loyal regulars
    • Efficient operations: keeping a busy floor running smoothly
    • Multitasking under pressure: juggling a full section with a smile
    • Teamwork and communication: keeping the kitchen, hosts and guests in sync

We rewrote her resume from top to bottom, practiced interviews and built her confidence one conversation at a time.

    The leap

She landed a job as the office manager at a local audiology practice. And she was a rock star! When two of the doctors decided to open their own practice, they didn’t just ask her to come along. They asked her to run it.

    The ownership moment

Years later, when those doctors were ready to retire, they knew exactly who should take the reins. She bought the practice. The woman who once wondered if she had any business skills was now a business owner.

    Building the brand

Together, we rebranded the practice with a bold new name and a vision big enough to reach every community in the region.

Here’s the beautiful twist. As we mapped her strategic plan, she realized her version of success looked a little different. She loved her home base, so we doubled down on it. Then she grew on her own terms and added a second location in a nearby town. That’s the power of a great plan. It isn’t about someone else’s definition of success. It’s about yours.

    15 years later

For 15 years, I’ve led marketing, branding and business growth for her practice. Today, she’s planning her own retirement from a business she built, owns and loves.

Dreams do come true. With a strategic plan, an accountability partner and someone to keep you pushing, exploring and evolving, you can reach your full potential.

    Your turn

Maybe you’re where she was. Great at what you do, ready for something new and not quite sure how to get there. You don’t have to figure it out alone. Let’s spark what’s possible. I believe in you.

  • Scaling Up Your Life: BHAGs, Core Values and a One-Page Personal Plan

Scaling Up Your Life: BHAGs, Core Values and a One-Page Personal Plan

Some goals are bigger than a quarter or even a year. They’re the dreams you whisper about on a beach at sunset. Scaling Up gives those dreams a home.

Scaling Up is the growth methodology Verne Harnish shares in his book of the same name, building on his famous Rockefeller Habits. It helps companies grow by getting four things right: People, Strategy, Execution and Cash. Guess what? Those four decisions shape a great life, too.

    The four decisions, made personal

Scaling Up decisionAt workIn your life
PeopleHiring and keeping the right teamSurrounding yourself with people who lift you up
StrategyChoosing where to play and how to winDeciding what you’ll say yes (and no) to
ExecutionPriorities, metrics and meeting rhythmsDaily habits, weekly reviews, quarterly goals
CashFueling growth without running dryFinancial stability that gives you freedom

    Dream big with a BHAG

A BHAG is a Big Hairy Audacious Goal, a 10 to 25 year target so bold it’s a little scary. Companies use one to rally everyone around a shared future. Yours might be “Own a home by the water,” “Launch a foundation for kids in my city” or “Visit every continent with my family.” Write it down. Say it out loud. It changes how you make decisions today.

    Know your core values

Great companies hire, fire and decide based on core values. Pick three to five values that describe you at your best. Integrity? Adventure? Generosity? They become your filter. When an opportunity doesn’t match your values, it’s an easy no.

    Build your one-page personal plan

Scaling Up is famous for the One-Page Strategic Plan. Here’s a personal version you can sketch in an afternoon:

    • Core values: three to five words that define you
    • Purpose: why you do what you do
    • BHAG: your 10 to 25 year dream
    • 3-year picture: what life looks like when you’re on track
    • 1-year goals: three to five measurable wins across Body, Mind, Spirit, Connection and Stability
    • Quarterly priorities: the three things that matter most right now
    • Rhythm: daily intentions, a weekly review and a quarterly reflection

Companies scale with discipline and rhythm. So can you.

    Keep the rhythm going

Scaling Up teams rely on a steady cadence of daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly check-ins. Try a two-minute morning intention, a Sunday review and a quarterly reflection. And once a year? Plan something special. A few days away, maybe even a WAVES retreat, to look back, celebrate and dream even bigger.

Running Your Life on EOS: Rocks, Scorecards and a Weekly Rhythm

Ever set big goals in January and wonder where they went by March? You’re not alone. That’s exactly the problem EOS® helps companies solve, and its tools are surprisingly easy to bring home.

EOS stands for the Entrepreneurial Operating System®, introduced by Gino Wickman in his book Traction. It helps leadership teams get clear on their vision, stay focused and hold each other accountable. Here are the pieces I love most for personal life.

The crosswalk: EOS at work vs. EOS at home

Vision/Traction Organizer®Core values, focus and long-range planYour values, passions and 10, 3 and 1 year picture

IDSIdentify, Discuss, Solve issuesName the obstacle, talk it through, pick a next step

    1. Your Vision/Traction Organizer®, simplified

At work, the V/TO™ captures a company’s core values, focus, long-range target and plan on two pages. At home, answer a few questions: What are my core values? What am I passionate about? Where do I want to be in 10 years, 3 years and 1 year? That’s your personal north star.

    2. Rocks: your 90-day priorities

Companies pick 3 to 7 “Rocks” each quarter, the most important things to get done in the next 90 days. For your life, pick three. Maybe it’s finishing a certification, planning a family trip and running three times a week. Ninety days is long enough to make real progress and short enough to stay urgent.

    3. A personal Scorecard

EOS teams review a handful of weekly numbers that show whether the business is on track. Your scorecard can be just as simple:

    • Workouts this week
    • Books or chapters read
    • Quality evenings with family or friends
    • Money saved or invested
    • A 1 to 5 rating of how you feel about the week

    4. A weekly check-in (your own Level 10 Meeting™)

EOS leadership teams meet every week in the same format. Steal the idea! Block 20 minutes every Sunday. Review your scorecard, check your Rocks and look at the week ahead. Consistency beats intensity every single time.

    5. IDS: Identify, Discuss, Solve

When something’s off track, EOS teams use IDS to fix it: identify the real issue, discuss it openly and decide on a solution. Try it with a partner or accountability buddy. Name the real obstacle, talk it through and commit to one next step.

Vision without traction is just daydreaming. Pick three Rocks, check your numbers weekly and watch what happens.

  • OGSM for Your Life: The One-Page Plan Behind Big Brands (and Big Dreams)

OGSM for Your Life: The One-Page Plan Behind Big Brands (and Big Dreams)

The best companies don’t leave growth to chance, and neither should you. This is the first of three articles on how to borrow proven company strategy frameworks for your personal ambitions. First up: OGSM.

If I could hand you just one planning tool, it would be OGSM. It fits on a single page. It connects your biggest dream to what you’ll do on a Tuesday afternoon. And it’s been a quiet powerhouse behind some of the world’s best-run companies for decades, including P&G, where I first saw it in action while leading agency work for the brand.

    What OGSM stands for

    • Objective: one inspiring, qualitative statement of what you want to achieve.
    • Goals: a few specific, measurable results that prove you got there.
    • Strategies: the choices you’ll make to reach your goals. Where you’ll focus, and just as important, where you won’t.
    • Measures: the numbers you’ll track along the way to know each strategy is working.

    How a company uses it

A brand team might write an objective like “Become the most loved brand in our category.” Goals put numbers on it, like market share and household reach. Strategies choose the path, like winning with younger families or launching a new product line. Measures track the progress every month so the team can adjust fast.

    How you can use it

Here’s a real-life example I love. Say your objective is a healthier, more energized year.

    OGSMCompany examplePersonal example
ObjectiveBecome the most loved brand in our categoryFeel strong, energized and present this year
GoalsGrow share 2 points by year endRun a 10K by October and sleep 7+ hours most nights
StrategiesWin with young families; launch a new lineTrain with a friend; protect a 10 p.m. bedtime
MeasuresMonthly share and trial ratesWorkouts per week and average hours of sleep

An objective without measures is a wish. Measures without an objective are just busywork. OGSM gives you both.

Build your OGSM in 30 minutes

    • Dream first. Write your objective in one sentence. Make it exciting enough to get you out of bed.
    • Pick 2 to 3 goals. Make them measurable and give them a date.
    • Choose 3 to 4 strategies. These are your big moves. Keep the list short.
    • Assign a measure to each strategy. Something you can check weekly or monthly.
    • Put it where you’ll see it. Fridge, desk, phone lock screen. Visibility is half the magic.

    Make it a family affair

OGSM works beautifully for families, too. Try a family objective like “Laugh more, stress less and make memories together.” Then let everyone help choose the goals. Kids love tracking progress, especially when there’s a celebration at the finish line!
